Explokart – “Exploratie en toegankelijkheid van Nederlandse kartografische documenten, 16de-20ste eeuw” – is het onderzoeksprogramma in de geschiedenis van de cartografie dat vanaf 2013 onderdeel van Allard Pierson van de Universiteit van Amsterdam is. Explokart legt zich toe op het onderzoek van Nederlandse wandkaarten, landkaarten, stadsplattegronden, zeekaarten, atlassen en globes.
Het doel van Explokart is om gebruikers te instrueren hoe oude kaarten als historische bron gebruikt kunnen worden. Dit wordt bereikt door hen te informeren over de specifieke kenmerken van cartografisch materiaal. Explokart classificeert deze documenten en maakt ze toegankelijk voor leden van andere vakken en voor het grote publiek.
Onderzoek door vrijwilligers
Vrijwilligers leveren een belangrijke bijdrage aan de onderzoeksactiviteiten. In 1993 startte het Explokart–team tutorials in de cartobibliografie voor vrijwilligers, die later deel gingen uitmaken van een werkgroep die een specifiek onderwerp onder handen nam. De resultaten van dit onderzoek zijn gepubliceerd in de reeks Explokart Historisch-Cartografische Studies. De inspanningen van zeer bekwame vrijwilligers maakten het voor Explokart mogelijk om over onderwerpen uit de historische cartografie te publiceren die anders vanwege de beperkte tijd van het vaste personeel achterwege zouden zijn gebleven.
Geschiedenis van Explokart
Explokart is in 1981 opgericht door professor Günter Schilder aan de Universiteit Utrecht. De Universiteit Utrecht had tot 2004 de enige leerstoel in de geschiedenis van de cartografie. Het functioneerde als een knooppunt van nationale en internationale contacten. In Utrecht was een hoog kennisniveau opgebouwd. Door verandering van het onderzoeksthema aan de Utrechtse universiteit is Explokart in 2013 verhuisd naar de Bijzondere Collecties – thans Allard Pierson – van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. In 2015 is daar door de Stichting Cartographiae Historicae Cathedra (CHC) professor Bram Vannieuwenhuyze als bijzonder hoogleraar historische cartografie aangesteld. Sinds augustus 2020 is Explokart aangesloten bij de Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory and Material Culture (AHM) aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

Explokart – “Exploration and accessibility of Dutch cartographic documents, 16th-20th century” – is the research program in the history of cartography that has been part of the University of Amsterdam and Allard Pierson since 2013. Explokart focuses on the research of Dutch wall maps, topographical maps, city maps, hydrographic maps, sea charts, atlases and globes.
The aim of Explokart is to instruct users on how to use old maps as a historical source. This is accomplished by informing the users about the specific characteristics of cartographic materials, as well as the problems involved in their interpretation. Explokart classifies these documents and makes them accessible to members of the discipline and to the general public.
Research by volunteers
Volunteers have made an important contribution toward the research activities. In 1993 the staff started tutorials in the bibliography of maps for volunteers, who later formed part of a working group involved in a specific subject. The results of this research are published in the series Explokart Studies in the History of Cartography. The efforts of highly competent volunteers made it possible for Explokart to study topics in historical cartography that would otherwise have been left unattended by the tenured staff for lack of time.
History of Explokart
Explokart was founded 1981 by professor Günter Schilder at Utrecht University. Until 2004, Utrecht University had the only chair in the history of cartography. It functions as a hub of national and international contacts. A high level of expertise has been built up in Utrecht. Because the Utrecht faculty started to focus on different themes in geography, Expokart moved in 2013 to the Special Collections of the University of Amsterdam. In 2015 the Cartographiae Historicae Cathedra Foundation (CHC) has appointed professor Bram Vannieuwenhuyze as Professor by Special Appointment for the History of Cartography. Since August 2020, Explokart has been affiliated with the Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory and Material Culture (AHM) at the University of Amsterdam.
